About Mr. Folmar
My previous school was in Manton, Michigan. Working with this small program really focused my attention to the individual musician and how much of an impact he or she makes. This idea continues to be very important me and I will encourage every person in our ensembles to work hard as an independent musician which will lead to benefits for the entire group. This also means that I want everyone to invest in the program and communicate your expectations and needs to me so we rise to success TOGETHER.
As a student at Central Michigan University, I was fortunate to be a part of a very competitive and strong saxophone studio. Our professor pushed both performance and education majors to be the very best each day by stressing the importance of preparation, perseverance, and research. These skills got me through many music and life experiences and I hope to encourage all student musicians to cultivate them as well. I was also a part of the CMU Basketball Band and Chippewa Marching Band – two athletic ensembles that brought excitement and spirit to a whole new level! I’m a person who invests in school pride and am looking forward to seeing how the students and staff in Berkley celebrate our community!
The primary reason for moving to this part of Michigan was to be closer to my family. I feel that family and friends are a significant and important part of each person and influence how we feel and act as individuals. There are many types of families and communities from school, to band, to teams, to friends that all serve important roles and balancing them can be a challenge. I encourage you to be open to serving all the types of communities you belong to and communicate when you face a need or conflict between them.
Finally, I want to share with all of you that I am human! As a student I was convinced that teachers were from a different planet, but now I can confirm – we’re just Earthlings like you. This is a truth about us: We will all make mistakes – and that’s AWESOME! Mistakes are crucial to the learning process and sometimes lead to new and inventive ways of achieving objectives. My strict goal is this though: Learn from mistakes and don’t repeat a mistake. While nobody can be perfect in this goal, I strive for perfection and will expect that same effort from musicians and students.
